What then is the ideal situation on judges? Well, the plain fact is that there is no real ideal situation that fits every country. (That’s what, in my view, makes the FCI’s almost total reciprocity of judges between one country and another so inappropriate.) Obviously in countries where dog shows have total entries overall of just two or three hundred dogs, then all breed judges are absolutely necessary. You simply could never have a specialist breeder judge for each breed – nor even a group judge for each group. On the other hand in a county where shows regularly have in excess of 5.000 dogs entered, it is possible to have far more breeder judges involved.
Perhaps the best compromise for countries such as the USA and even in the UK for the numerically smaller breeds, would be to have as many breeder judges as possible and then lo make up the rest of the assignments by encouraging the development of judges who arc real experts in their group – or who are at most expert in say a couple of groups. That to me seems feasible and would perhaps be a way of ensuring a good balance of knowledge being applied to breeds to achieve the best mixture of breed type and quality)’ on the one hand and general soundness on the other.
I think I am prepared to look at a well trained and experienced group judge and accept that it is just possible in their case to paraphrase Oliver Goldsmith and accept that; “one small head could carryall he knew”- at least about a few breeds!
